The real key to success on the internet is to build a site with a unique theme. The subject matter, or the product(s) that you are selling must cater to a niche market.
Once you get people to visit your site, you want them to come back, time and time again. Varying theme content, and adding to your product base, will keep them checking back for more.
Site design should be uncluttered and easy to navigate. You don't want anyone getting lost, or confused.
A way to get started with a commercial site, is to offer products that you can "drop ship". You take orders for the products through your site, then the supplier ships them directly to the customer. Lots of advantages for you... the biggest being no inventory to warehouse or handle. The trick here is to find the companies willing to drop ship. I strongly recommend World Wide Brands as your source for such companies. Their lists are complete and up to date, and the initial investment is relatively low.
Whether your site is commercial or personal in nature, "pay per click" ads are a good way to keep that revenue coming in. Google "AdSense" is probably the best. Here's how it works: They will supply you with a code that you insert into your site. The code displays clickable ads that are applicable to your site theme. Visitors click on the ads. You get paid per click.
Also, there are a number of "affiliate" opportunities that can add to your bottom line. You place a link (text or image), on your web page. Your visitors click on these links, which take them to a supplier of goods or services. You get paid when your visitors buy one of those products or services. Affiliate example...
That's about all the tips I have to offer, except for a parting word of advise. DON'T OVER DO IT WITH THE ADVERTISING on your site. A few "pay per clicks", or image ads, are better than a forrest of them. People sometimes get lost in a forrest!
