Herons in Metro Vancouver

For those of us who are active in the outdoors, it seems that no matter where we go, the Great Blue Herons are there to greet us. What a welcome sight they are!

Following, are a few of the many places that I've had the pleasure of their aquaintance:

Black-Crowned Night Heron

The "night shift" of the heron family, the Black-Crowned Night Heron feeds in the same areas that other herons frequent during the day.

Black-Crowned Night Herons usually nest in colonies on platforms of wood sticks.


Great Blue Heron



Here's Looking at You!



Although a great blue heron is a large bird, their nests are not nearly as substantial as those of eagles. They tend to be more flat than deep, and are not nearly as large or heavy. Besides, great blue herons usually build their nest in a group of somtimes a hundred or more, called a heronry.
